Old Vinnie with Zappa?

hey guys, i have been hangin' around this board for about a year now, throwing in a comment, ohhhh...rarely ever!. anyway, i hope i am not bringing up something you guys have already ground into the dirt, but here goes! i have most everything vinnie has played on, and notice the most talked about zappa recording is the *joe's garage* album. but does anyone own or have heard what i think is pure genius, zappa's SHUT UP 'N PLAY YER GUITAR? there is some great vinnie on this record.(not to mention great guitar playing as well) it's twenty five years old, we all know vinnie is a better player today, but there is still some untouchable playing on this record. just in case some of you haven't heard it, i am posting a couple tunes for you. i hope you like it!

this tune is called (in jest) *VARIATIONS ON THE CARLOS SANTANA SECRET CHORD PROGRESSIONS* the opening drum fill is pure vinnie! awesome!

When I was younger, I bought the Guitar book of "Shut up and Play Your Guitar" because I thought I could try to read the drum charts.....LMAO

I would sit in my room and listen to the album (yes album!) and read the charts at the same time.

Well...I was kind of sucessful anyway.
Never was able to actually play them though.

Ahhh to be young again.

i cant agree enough... i have that double cd.. five five five.. blows me away... vinnie accelerates through the whole tune.... quite a contrast to another tune in 5.. oh i dont know.. seven days ...

Vai was paid a dollar a page for the work. Vai was 18 and though this was the 70's and minimum wage was probably around $2.00 hour, I still think he could have gotten the labor department on Zappa's butt for gross underpayment. ;-)

Yeah, some very Tony-ish off-the-cuff blowing by Vinnie. Still some of my favorite playing of his, and he was, I think, all of about 21 or 22 at this point! Unbelievable. He went to some really interesting places rhythmically during his time with Zappa (this recording was basically a compilation of instrumental jams taken from various live shows during that time), and this recording captures it beautifully.

Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar is the best. It's a 3 cd (record) set and as it says on the inside some of the music will "Curl your toes" Vinnies great on that. Beat it w/ your fist and return of the son of...are probably my favorites

SUNPYG BLEW ME AWAY.

It was the early 80's & I thought Neil was god.
I first heard that album sometime in early '84.

Much of Vnnie's off-the-cuff playing on there was way over my head ATT, as I was just starting out. What i heard was strange & beautiful, exciting & new, & BALL'S ALL OUT. Some of it i couldnt yet understand, but i new this was some seriously heavy sh** compared to what i had heard previously [da** wussy-a**ed pop radio [img]wink.gif[/img] ]. Unbridled rippin'.

Then Vinnie came in clinic w T Landers '84, & cleaned EVERYONE'S clock in town/sent the cocky bad-boys packin'.

This album wiped that cocky, "I'm a drummer, & my favorite drummer is better than yours" smirk right off the face of anyone I played it to...except the multitudes where it just flew right over & past their heads [those Unfortunate Ones that simply "Could Not Grasp"] [img]wink.gif[/img] ...1 of these partly being me!!

Yeah, I have to agree, Shut Up N'Play Yer Guitar contains some amazing Vinnie jems. I love that opening fill on VARIATIONS ON THE CARLOS SANTANA SECRET CHORD PROGRESSIONS as well. However, the transcription book for that album that Vai did is a mess. Most of those transcriptions are not accurate and contain a lot of errors. Our own Marc Atkinson(of Unreel Drumbook fame)has transcribed most of this album and his charts are pretty much spot on. If I'm not mistaken, he can play a good deal of that stuff too.
